Women at Washington and Lee have shaped history since the first coed Law School class graduated in 1975. Today, alumnae lead through philanthropy, mentorship and service—supporting W&L’s exceptional liberal arts education and empowering future generations. The Lettie Pate Evans Society celebrates the university’s largest donor and encourages women to realize their potential as philanthropic leaders who will carry forward an impactful legacy at W&L.

"I hope that, through the Lettie Pate Evans Society, women and men who are currently students at W&L will look to the philanthropists who are giving back and realize the importance of donating."  - Amy Farnsworth ’97

What inspired you to become a member and co-chair of the Lettie Pate Evans Society, and how does it reflect your values and connection to Washington and Lee University?

When I was first asked to co-chair Lettie Pate Evans Society, I really didn't know much about Lettie Pate Evans. I had gone to the Evans Hall every day my freshman year but didn't know who she was or why she had chosen to give to W&L. I learned the reasons she gave was because she believed in the institution and the values that it upholds.

I think back on the first days I came to campus and the feeling of the Honor System and the Speaking Tradition. It feels like a warm embrace when the students say hello to you. That sense of belonging and sense of welcome that you get from W&L is something that is so unique. So, when I thought about giving back to the things that are important to me and what I want to see continue, it's to places like W&L that believe in its students. The university is instilling honesty, integrity and all of the traits we need in our society today.

How do you hope your support through the Lettie Pate Evans Society will empower future generations of W&L students and alumni?

I hope that, through the Lettie Pate Evans Society, women and men who are currently students at W&L will look to the philanthropists who are giving back and realize the importance of donating and that a lot of the wonderful benefits they receive at W&L are because people have paid it forward.

What does it mean to you to be part of a growing network of women who are helping shape Washington and Lee’s future through both leadership and philanthropy?

It means everything to be a part of this group. It means there's hope that we can have a community that honors honesty and integrity and that we can put people out in the world who believe in the values W&L is teaching — and that this excellent school will continue to thrive for years to come.
